According to The Sun reporter, Tom Barclay, Wigan Athletic are among a number of clubs hoping to strike a deal for West Brom’s Sam Field before today’s deadline.
It’s reported that Shrewsbury, Charlton and Wigan have all offered to take the youngster on loan, presumably for the entirety of next season. While Latics and Barnsley have also made bids to sign the midfielder permanently, however, The Baggies are unwilling to sell. The 21-year-old is highly rated at The Hawthorns, but only made 10 appearances last year, clearly, the aim is for him to gain experience elsewhere.
Being a Wigan fan, this frightened me more than excited me. Who’s leaving, was my initial thought. We’ve already got Lee Evans, Sam Morsy, Joe Williams, Jenson Weir and Lewis Macleod battling for two midfield spots, why sign another one?
Morsy was missing from the squad on Saturday, I’ve no doubt he was injured as he’s our captain and likes to be fighting for us in the middle of the park. However, these links to Field this late in the window, do worry me a touch.
I’ve seen it before. With James McCarthy and Will Grigg. Clubs panic buy and offer ridiculous money that the club can’t turn down. I was hoping for a quiet day today, no permanent outgoings and perhaps sign a centre back. You don’t always get what you wish for.
Look, Field is a talented player and I’m sure he’ll improve and become a good player. I just question why we need him, I thought McLeod and Evans were outstanding on Saturday. Paul Cook will have Morsy and Williams banging on his door asking for a start, surely that’s enough competition for two midfield spots.
