According to the Football Insider, Leon Clarke is a target for Birmingham City, Hull City and Wigan Athletic. The striker is available on a free transfer after Sheffield United chose not to extend his contract.
Dan from The Football Manc Cave looks at whether Clarke would be a good signing for Wigan Athletic.
The 34-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Wigan, in his second spell at the club. Clarke scored on debut vs QPR and played brilliantly in fact, however that was about as good as it got. After scoring three goals, Clarke returned to Sheffield United.
As it stands, we only have two strikers – Callum Lang and Joe Garner. Lang has never played a competitive league game for us, Garner is proven at the level and done well last season. Although we struggled for a regular goalscorer in the last campaign. If we want to improve and push for mid-table, Paul Cook MUST sign a quality number nine, whether it’s a permanent or loan move.
I’d like us to sign two strikers, and loan out Lang again to a League One side. It’s too much pressure to throw a 20-year-old in as a lone striker and expect him to hit the ground running. Either use him as a supporting role off the bench or send him out on loan to score goals and gain experience.
If we’re signing Clarke for competition for places purposes, then fair enough, he’ll do a job once in a while, especially for free. He’s not good enough to be our starting striker, we need better. Us Latics fans want an exciting, young striker we can get behind. The deal for Sam Gallagher is off, I just hope they’ve got back-up options, if not I worry for our future next season.
