According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Wigan Athletic has made an offer to sign Everton midfielder Joe Williams.
The 22-year-old has had two successful loan spells at Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers during the past two seasons. However could be pushing for a permanent move away from Goodison Park, to secure himself a long-term contract and first-team football.
Wigan recently signed Antonee Robinson from Everton, following his impressive finish to the season at the DW Stadium. Perhaps Robinson is twisting Williams’ arm, and encouraging him to make the switch too.
Wigan need to replace James
Williams, in my opinion, is the exact type of player we need. A box-to-box midfielder that can tackle, has a good passing range and can chip in with a few goals. Replacing Reece James is nigh on impossible, but as I’ve said a number of times this summer, it’s important that we replace his attributes and find a similar style player.
Morsy breaks up play brilliantly, presses the ball and leads by example. We need to find him a regular partner, and perhaps someone more adventurous with the ball. That’s not a criticism of Morsy, he does his job very well. The Egyptian isn’t the type to dribble past players and score goals, however, his defensive work more than make up for that.
Williams could be the ‘ball-playing midfielder’ we need. The one that looks for the defence-splitting passes, has the freedom to drive on and start attacks. He certainly has that ability, watch his first-ever goal in professional football for Barnsley vs Burton. A screamer.
The midfielder has been at Everton’s academy since the age of seven and was tipped to become a star at Goodison Park. However, a couple of injuries set him back, and with The Toffees spending big money on players like Andre Gomes, it’s very difficult to see Williams ever getting into the Everton first-team.
