Lincoln boss Danny Cowley is the early bookmakers’ favourite to replace the departing Lampard. The deal for Lampard to return to Stamford Bridge is expected to be completed this week.
Since news broke yesterday that Derby had formally granted Chelsea permission to speak to Lampard, the bookmakers’ have priced up his predecessor with personal terms unlikely to be a problem. “Frank, you have the opportunity to manage Reece James, deal or no deal?” “Deal”.
Cowley is a young, ambitious manager seemingly destined to manage at the highest level. He has two promotions on his CV, from just three seasons at Lincoln. He built a side that played attractive, expansive football and they blew away League Two with ease last season, winning the division by six points. Cowley would inherit a talented squad at Derby, and one that would suit his style of management. It’s an appointment that makes perfect sense, he deserves his opportunity to test himself in the Championship.
Other names on the potential list of replacements include Darren Moore, Steven Gerrard and Gary Rowett. Moore was harshly sacked from West Brom when sitting in fourth spot last season, does he play the ‘easy on the eye’ style football that Derby is looking for though?
Gerrard seems to be building something special at Ibrox and looking to really challenge Celtic for the SPL title, while a return to Pride Park for Gary Rowett seems unlikely. Although his sacking from Birmingham came as a real shock, he struggled under the pressure at Derby and Stoke previously, when gifted the opportunity to sign big money players.
It’s looking like a nightmare few weeks for Derby. A play-off final defeat, their three best players last season returning to their home clubs and now Lampard is off.
