The Football Manc Cave

Focusing on the football news in Greater Manchester

Two things Man City have learnt from their friendlies – Agree?

Man City have had a pre-season tour of Asia and despite losing in the Premier League Asia Trophy final to Wolves, The Football Manc Cave look at what Pep Guardiola and his team have learnt ahead of the season.

Man City got all the way to the final of the friendly competition only to lose on penalties, 3-2. Some players like Aguero and Ederson weren’t available in these friendlies as their summer commitments meant they had to start their summer break later than others. This gave other players a chance to shine and Pep Guardiola a chance to weigh up his options ahead of next season.

So what have the Blues learnt?

Captain

Vincent Kompany’s departure from the club at the end of last season left the captain role vacant. This pre-season campaign has given the players and Pep Guardiola an experimental chance to see who fits the bill best. Guardiola has given David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne the chance to wear the armband in these games.

He has also recently stated that the players will choose who will be their new leader. It has got to go to Silva for his final season with the club. De Bruyne started the game against Wolves as captain and was subbed later in the game, they went on to lose. However, David Silva was the captain in a recent friendly against Kitchee FC where they won 6-1. The only problem with this is when Silva does depart the club, it will leave them looking for another new captain again.

Options

These friendlies have also shown fans and the team that they have a lot of back up options. As stated at the beginning of this article, key players like Ederson and Aguero were not available for these games yet Man City have still had a good run. They’ve obviously got new signings like Rodri and Angeliño who will be exciting options ahead of next season but they’ve also got Leroy Sané.

He’s impressed and even managed to score a few in the pre-season, meaning he’s willing and ready to prove himself to Pep Guardiola and the footballing world. There’s been a lot of gossip about him this transfer window and I think he’s trying to show that he wants to stay with the Manchester side.
