Man City are looking for a third place keeper going into next season and it could come in the form of 35-year-old Asier Riesgo.
There’s more about the keeper here. I wish him all the best if he does sign for City and hopes he gets out of it exactly what he wants. However, there’s been a lot of pointless keeper signings over the years.
Like any other role on the field, you always need back up in case of injuries, suspension and generally if you need a change in your squad but more recently, signing goalkeepers for the sake of it has been a trend.
With big clubs having fourth and fifth choice goalkeepers these days, it’s hard for them to get a break and some should be sent out on loan more often in my opinion.
With that being said, I take a look at three pointless signings that have been involved in the Manchester Clubs…
He’s 36 years old now and he’s been with Manchester United since 2018. He’s had 0 appearances in that time, yes he may not have had long for an opportunity but he’s been at around nine other clubs in the past and not really has a club that he’s found his feet at with his longest spell being at Sheffield Wednesday.
Wright is now 41 and a goalkeeper coach for Man City. He signed for City as a player in 2012 and was a blue till 2016. He had 0 appearances in that time. A real waste of time and money, although I suppose City have made the most out of the player by keeping him on as a coach to this day.
In an article a few days ago, I suggested how Muric may benefit from following new manager Vincent Kompany and going on loan to Anderlecht.
The City keeper is only 20 years old and hasn’t really had a chance with Pep Guardiola’s team. He was sent to NAC Breda last year on loan and only called back when Bravo was injured. You could even argue that he isn’t City’s third choice keeper when Daniel Grimshaw is a year older and has had more appearances with the blues.
