Wigan Athletic hope these 2 key fixtures will turn form around

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook

Wigan Athletic fans are getting increasingly frustrated with their team’s performances. Their away form is poor and the results aren’t going their way.

The Latics are currently 20th in the Championship. they sit on 15 points. However, teams below them are catching up.

Luton Town is on 14 points, Middlesbrough is just below on 13, Stoke City are on 11 points and Barnsley is at the bottom on 9 points.

Some fans are getting fed up of manager, Paul Cook. They think it’s his time to go. However, the Wigan team need to focus on each game.

Another criticism that the squad have received, is the fact that they don’t play a full 90 minutes. It’s like the team switch off too early and concede late on.

Wigan also had a poor game at the weekend. They lost 3-0 to Brentford at home and even went 1-0 down after 5 minutes. Cedric Kipre got sent off too.

In a bid to turn these performances around, there are a couple of fixtures that Wigan could take advantage of…

Stoke City away

Next Saturday, Wigan will face Stoke away. Don’t get me wrong, I am aware of Wigan’s poor away form.

I am also aware that Stoke won their last game against Barnsley, 4-2. This means they could be feeling confident ahead of their clash with Wigan.

However, Stoke City is below Wigan in the league and the Latics should take full advantage of that. If they can go ahead early, they should stand a chance of taking all three points.

Wigan Athletic away at Luton Town

On the 7th of December, Wigan will travel to Luton. Even though this is another away clash, like many fans, I hope they will be able to take advantage of the fact Luton are currently below them in the Championship.

Luton’s last win was on the 19th of October against Bristol City. Wigan needs to take advantage of that fact and try to take all 3 points.

If they don’t manage to take the maximum points from at least one of these games, I think fans will make it clear that it is time for Cook to go.

2 Managers that could replace Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic

This weekend saw Wigan lose 3-0 to Brentford. Fans are now getting increasingly frustrated with Paul Cook and their team’s performances.

While most fans are wanting to see change, most still actually like Cook. He’s done a lot for Wigan over the years and fans won’t disregard that.

However, the excuses he keeps making for the losses and poor performances are really getting to fans.

One week he will blame the Championship itself and say the league is too hard. Another he may blame the players.

If he is to be replaced soon, the question right now is who will replace him? There are a few options like Sam Allardyce that would be sensible, but as a Bolton fan, I’d hate to see that.

Here’s two who would be great options…

Chris Hughton

The 60-year-old certainly has experience when it comes to management. He has had many successful jobs at Tottenham, Newcastle, Brighton and Birmingham to name a few.

He has played and managed at different levels. Furthermore, Hughton has 2 Championship promotions, a play-off place and stabilizing Norwich City and Brighton in the Premier League.

David Moyes

Possibly most remembered for his time at Everton, Moyes could be a perfect replacement. Experience at Preston, Sunderland, Man United and West Ham could also help.

He has been out of a job since he left West Ham last year. Could Wigan be his next task? It certainly wouldn’t be a bad move in his career as he seems to thrive in tough situations.

How is Wigan Athletic’s Callum Lang getting on at Shrewsbury?

Wigan fans were gutted earlier this season when Callum Lang went on loan to Shrewsbury. The Football Manc Cave takes a look at how he’s getting on.

Callum Lang has slowly become a fan favourite at Wigan. However, earlier the season, some were quite vocal on how they felt about him going out on loan.

The 21 year old went and joined Shrewsbury on loan to gain some more playing experience.

Some fans couldn’t understand why he was being allowed to leave as Wigan have been struggling themeselves.

Others understood that this would benefit Lang’s career. However, the striker is struggling to get appearances.

Current form

The striker has played 5 games so far and scored once in his time at the new club. He has also received 0 yellow or red cards.

Lang has previously been at the likes of Morecambe and Oldham on loan spells. He will now be looking to be better than ever during this loan spell.

Deserves more

Shrewsbury are currently 11th in League One. Lang is a player who will want to help this team build.

He is a product of Wigan’s youth and has worked his way up. Now he deserves more of a shot at Shrewsbury.

2 danger signs for Wigan Atheltic as they lose against Swansea

Wigan played Swansea at home this weekend. Unfortunately, they lost 2-1. Fans are getting frustrated.

Swansea are 3rd in the Championship so this weekend was always going to be a tough clash for a 20th placed Wigan.

However, the Latics have divided fans with their performance. Some think Wigan deserved more from the game.

Others are completely blaming Paul Cook. Wigan went 1-0 down after 12 minutes. They only equalised after they got a penalty.

Swansea scored a 92nd minute winner which rattled Wigan fans even more. With that in mind, here’s two warning signs for the Latics…

Last minute

This isn’t the first time that Wigan have conceded a goal late on. It has actually happened a few times in recent weeks.

Fans are understandably getting annoyed at this. The team need to stay switched on until the last minute. Not until the 85th.

Paul Cook

No one can deny what Paul Cook has done for Wigan in the past. However, most fans are fed up.

His post match interviews are full of excuses rather than picking up on the frustration. He is also making substitutes too late that are changing the style of play in the wrong ways.

Wigan Athletic needs these two players to step up if they are avoid defeat against Swansea

Wigan are desperate for their first away win of the season. However, they have a bigger challenge this weekend as they face Swansea at home.

Fans are getting frustrated with Paul Cook and his team. While there are a few players giving their all every week, there are some who aren’t.

They have failed to get an away win too. Their home form is a lot better.

In their last game at the DW Stadium, they won 1-0 against Nottingham Forest. They then travelled to Derby and lost 1-0.

Last week, they faced Bristol away. It looked like they were about to win 2-1 until a late equaliser meant they only took a point.

Here’s two players who need to step up this week. However, it will be a hard game as Swansea are currently 4th in the Championship…

Gavin Massey

Fans were angry at the 27 year old against Bristol. He failed to make critical passes that cost Wigan the game.

The winger was subsequently taken off the pitch and subbed for Michael Jacobs in the secind half. Massey needs to stop being so greedy.

Joe Williams

The 22 year old was subbed in the second half against Bristol as well.

Kal Naismith replaced the central midfielder. However, Williams will need to improve if he wants to stay in the starting line up.

Newcastle United making a smart move by grabbing former Wigan Athletic man on loan

The Sun have reported that Steve Bruce is plotting an ambitious move. He wants to take Chelsea star, Reece James to Newcastle on loan.

It looks like Steve Bruce will be making a call to see if James is available for half a season at Newcastle.

Newcastle have struggled to fill the right back position this season. Players like Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and DeAndre Yedlin have all tried to fill that position so far this season.

However, Steve Bruce thinks that James will be a great addition to his side.

The 19 year old spent last season on loan with Wigan Athletic. He impressed that much that he ended up with the Captain’s arm band.

Chelsea

Reece James forced his way into Frank Lampard’s squad.

Unfortunately he will only get to play a few games because of Cesar Azpilicueta’s current form.

Steve Bruce

Bruce will be looking to benefit from this as he can offer the teenager weekly football.

This is a sensible and tactical plan from the Newcastle manager. It looks like Steve Bruce could try to pitch his plan to the teenager before the transfer window opens in January.

‘Thanks to Massey playing for the name on his back and not the badge on the front.’ Wigan fans react to their draw

Wigan Athletic travelled to Bristol City this weekend. They nearly grabbed the first away win of the season but unfortunately were subject to a late equaliser.

Chey Dunkley was Wigan’s goal hero. For the majority of the game, it looked like Wigan would get the first away win of the season.

However, Paul Cook’s side ended up drawing with Bristol City. The game finished 2-2 after an 86th minute equaliser.

The fact that Wigan managed to score two goals and take the lead is an improvement on their away form.

However, this is still disappointing for fans and the players. Here’s your Twitter reactions…

Wigan Atheltic’s 2 in, 2 out who could finally grab that elusive away win

Paul Cook’s Wigan squad have failed to win away so far this season. The Football Manc Cave have picked out 2 players who should be dropped and 2 who should be in the squad to help them take 3 points.

Wigan’s away form has been extremely poor. Fans are sick of Paul Cook’s excuses and are waiting for an away win.

Tomorrow, they travel to Bristol City and fans will be hoping to see some changes.

We have picked out two players who should be dropped and two who should be in the starting line up in order to try and win.

In: Joe Gelhardt

Whether the 17 year old gets started or just brought on as a sub, the teenager should definitely be given a chance.

Changing things up is something the whole team can benefit from. The teenager can work well with players like Jamal Lowe so why not give him a chance?

In: Lewis Macleod

The 25 year old is a relatively new player at the DW Stadium. He is getting some more playing time now.

However, if he could be a little more versatile, he may have more chances to start.

Out: Gavin Massey

Paul Cook has a tactic to start Massey and then bring him off in the second half. However, I believe he should do this the other way around.

Use Massey in the second half and bring him on to drive the attack. The 27 year old may benefit from that more.

Out: Jamal Lowe

I am not saying that the 25 year old should be dropped completely. However, at the start of the season, he was struggling.

He has now started to adapt to Championship football a little better. So why not use him as a substitute and completely change up the attacking line to throw other teams off?

’This hurt me more than any other previous result.’ Wigan Athletic fan react to their loss against Derby County

Wigan played Derby last night in hope to get an away win. The Football Manc Cave look at your reactions.

Paul Cook’s side have had a terrible away form so far this season. Fans have been disappointed with performances and are sick of excuses.

However, last night, they travelled to Derby. It looked as though things had made an improvement for a while.

The Latics managed to get to 90 minutes and it was still 0-0. Unfortunately, in the 92nd minute, Graeme Shinnie made it 1-0 to Derby and Wigan failed to take any points from the game.

17y/o Wigan Athletic star looking to make the big step up following his international break

A 17-year-old Wigan striker, Joe Gelhardt could be the next big thing. LetsHangOn.com rate him very highly and say that if he’s good enough, he’s old enough.

The Latics teenager has impressed while playing for England Under 18’s. He’s scored 3 goals in 6 games.

They now rumour that top Premier League scouts are monitoring him. With interest from Liverpool and Everton, the youngster may have some options.

However, Wigan fans will want their man to deliver for them first before he moves on.

Wigan

The youngster’s current contract at the DW Stadium expires in 2021. He’s previously scored for the Latics in a 2-2 draw against Hull. Now he could get more chances to shine.

He’s proven that he can work well with other Wigan players like Jamal Lowe. If Gelhardt was to break into the first team, he would fit in nicely next to Kieffer Moore.

Future

So far, the youngster has only made appearances after coming on as a sub. However, now that he’s proven his talent, Paul Cook could give him a chance.

The 17-year-old has already been compared to Michael Owen. Wigan should definitely make use of their man while they still have him. The more game time they give him now, the higher his value will rise.
