Stoke City pull their man from Bolton Wanderers squad

This weekend saw Bolton Wanderers kicked out of the FA Cup by League Two’s Plymouth Argyle. One player that wasn’t in the Bolton squad was Thibaud Verlinden.

Now, The Bolton News have reported why.

Verlinden is only on loan to Bolton. Like many players that have been recruited recently for the Trotters, he has been very impressive so far.

However, fans have been worried about what Bolton will do if these players have to return to their parent clubs soon.

Thibaud wasn’t in Bolton’s side that faced Plymouth this weekend. This had fans questioning what had happened to him.

The Bolton News has now revealed how it was actually Stoke who stopped their man from playing.

Stoke City

The winger is on loan from Stoke until January. However, new Stoke City boss, Michael O’Neill pulled him from Bolton’s FA Cup clash.

This now means that the Belgian player could enter Stoke’s squad for the competition. It has also confirmed Bolton’s worries about Stoke calling him back in January.

Plymouth Argyle

Bolton lost 1-0 this weekend against the League Two side. It was clear that they lacked creativity on the pitch, which was their main downfall. However, they can now start to concentrate more on clawing back in the league.

Whether Thibaud could have made a difference to the game or not will never be known for sure. However, finding a January replacement for the winger will be a hard job for Keith Hill, who up to now as got his recruitment right.

How is Stoke’s Thibaud Verlinden getting on at Bolton?

Stoke fans were shocked when Bolton signed their winger, Thibaud Verlinden. He’s only on loan with Keith Hill’s side but Stoke fans thought he would be ready to join their first team this season.

As a Bolton fan, I would like to thank Stoke. Verlinden has been absolutely brilliant for us so far.

The skill that the 20 year old has is unbelievable. He has also shown the determination with the rest of the Bolton team to try and get points.

Stoke fans will welcome him back with open arms. This spell in League One will prepare him for regular football if Stoke want to feature him in their first team.

Unfortunately, he suffered a groin injury a few weeks ago and missed two games. However, he’s back now and fit.

Current form

In 7 games, he has scored 2 goals. The youngster is talented. Not only can he score goals and contribute to others but he can also inspire with his footwork.

He isn’t afraid to take on opposition and get stuck in. I would say that he is definitely getting the most out of his time at Bolton.

Careful

Before he returns to Stoke in January, there are still a few things he needs to work on.

One thing is fouls. When Verlinden played against Blackpool, he picked up a yellow card and the referee had to have a word with him. That didn’t stop him however, as he continued to be quite careless on the pitch.

Wonderful: This Hill signing has been amazing for Bolton so far

Bolton Wanderers have started to take shape with a new pick of players for Keith Hill to choose from. The Football Manc Cave is looking at which signing has stood out so far.

Every player that Keith Hill has managed to bring in has contributed amazingly to the squad every game that they’ve been involved. Picking one is a hard choice because there’s quite a few that as a Bolton fan, I would want to keep.

Jack Hobbs is obviously a returning signing. He let the take over of the club settle before resigning a contract and I’m so glad he did. The defence has been much stronger with him in it and he constantly makes the league team of the week along with getting the man of the match against Blackpool.

Another player who has impressed a lot is Ali Crawford. His free kicks are sublime and his corners are nearly always spot on. He’s had a great run for us too and will continue to impress I’m sure.

Stoke man is impressing

A close second to the player I have chosen is Thibaud Verlinden. The 20-year-old winger has been loaned to us from Stoke. He scored on his debut for us, he gets stuck in and attacks every game, makes a nice pairing with all the other midfielders and wingers and is exciting.

This is why Stoke will be happy to claim their man back when his loan spell is over. Most never wanted him to go in the first place and now you can see why.

However, the player that I have had to pick is, of course, Liam Bridcutt. One of the best players I’ve seen in a Bolton shirt in a very long time. His skill on the ball is brilliant, he’s fast, not scared of any opposition and a strong leader. This is why every Bolton fan is feeling deflated today because he picked up an injury last night.

He fractured his collar bone and could potentially be put for 8 weeks. This could mean that we never get to see him in a Bolton shirt again. With his loan spell coming to an end and he’ll be back at Nottingham Forest before he’s ready to play again.

When you watch him play, you can certainly tell that he’s been around. He started off at Chelsea in their youth teams and now at 30 years old, he’s been at Stockport, Sunderland and Leeds to mention a few places.

Keith Hill doesn’t seem too bothered by it, as he knows he has other capable players and has been prepared for any injuries. It just would have been nice to have Bridcutt in the team a little longer because he made us long stronger.

A welcome break: 3 things Keith Hill will be working on with Bolton during their international break

Bolton Wanderers Keith Hill

The Football Manc Cave is looking at what Keith Hill needs to work on in training in order to try and get his first win as Bolton manager.

To Bolton fans, he’s already a legend. He’s come into a club who nearly went under and he has completely turned the football around with a bunch of brand new players. He is already beating the odds because he’s getting a side to take points from the bigger clubs in League One.

Hill has a lot of experience in these lower leagues and completely understands what he needs to do to achieve success. So just like the majority of our fans, I am completely behind him.

Even though he’s taking points from clubs like Blackpool and Sunderland, he’s yet to achieve his first three points. With how his side is looking, it will come soon.

What 3 things can he work on to make sure 3 points start to come?

Fitness

We’ve got a lot of new players who all seem fit, ready to go and are exciting. However, Hill spoke to the Bolton News about how he didn’t think the player’s fitness was at the level he wanted. So even though it’s not something that fans are picking up on, he knows exactly what is required and my guess is that fitness will be something he works on now.

It’s also a hard subject for some of his players, the youngsters in the squad who had to step up early in the season need to stay healthy as well as physically fit. Their welfare is now at interest as they had gone from just playing in the development squad to sometimes three games a week which was a test for them.

However, Hill and his coaching team know exactly how to tackle the situation and some of these players will be hard at work to impress in training.

Set Pieces and Attacking

At the start of the season, the defence seemed to be the biggest issue, however, that seems to be under control now. *Touches wood.* Now shots on target and the attack need a little more work. While we have players that are now capable of scaring oppositions defence, chances seem to be falling short.

Some may disagree but I’m seeing greed quite a few times in games. This has probably come from frustration in trying to find the back of the net.

Keeping Their Cool

This might again relate to fitness although it is a slightly different point. Like most fans for any club, I get nervous towards the final quarter of the game because I always think we’re going to mess it up.

However, for Bolton, this is something that’s getting better but still needs some work. We were just about to take all 3 points from Sunderland and narrowly missed out due to giving a penalty away in the last minutes of the game. I think that this comes from pressure and nerves within the team.

Many positives out of Bolton’s draw with Blackpool

Bolton Wanderers Keith Hill

Bolton Wanderers faced Blackpool last night and managed a 0-0 draw. The Football Manc Cave weighs in.

For the first time in a long time, I feel confident as a Bolton fan. I feel like I can actually bare to watch a game. I’m not comparing this to the times we were in financial difficulties, I’m talking about the past 5 years or so. Bolton is actually an exciting team to watch again.

Last nights game was highly anticipated as Blackpool are in the top quarter of the League One. Bolton had already proved that they can match top teams performances following the point from Sunderland, so I was actually excited for this game. I must admit, I expected a few goals but I’m happy.

I predicted the Bolton line-up yesterday and I was only one player out, I guessed that Keith Hill would choose either Dennis Politic or Thibaud Verlinden, and not start them both but he did. I think Keith Hill has been quite anxious about playing both of them together due to any potential injuries to either, as they can interchange in the same position

Dominant in attack

Bolton actually dominated the game. We had chances, made attacks and tried to score. That’s all fans have wanted to see for a long time. Looking at Liam Bridcutt, Jason Lowe, Dennis Politic, Ali Crawford, Will Buckley, Thibaud Verlinden and Daryl Murphy and how they have clearly been working hard on how to play together is so refreshing.

Keith Hill has worked wonders with his team. The defence we now have is also so much better to watch. There were times last night when I worried but I clearly didn’t need to be. Joe Dodoo also made his Bolton debut last night when he got brought on in the second half. A few of his chances looked promising so he’s one to watch for us.

Defensive Bolton

Stating Yoan Zouma has worked a treat. He gave away a penalty against Sunderland and I have said all along that if he didn’t keep on getting starts then his confidence would get knocked. However, Hill has kept him in that starting line up and he did a great job last night.

Josh Emmanuel is also developing and adjusting very well. Jack Hobbs is proving himself to the fans as he is constantly getting into the league team of the week and, even bagged himself, man of the match, last night. The defence clearly had a great game because Remi Matthews had a relatively easy night which is something I like to see.

Injury to the Captain

Liam Bridcutt has been an absolute delight to watch. His skill and hard work on the ball have made it easier to watch us attack and push forward as a team.

Unfortunately last night, after a bit of a stumble, Blackpool forward, Armand Gnanduillet landed awkwardly on Bridcutt’s chest and for a moment it looked like he was going to be okay as he breathed through the pain and came back on to the pitch. However, he was then seen crouching and passed on the Captain’s armband to Lowe. He really didn’t want to come off, and no fan did either. It was revealed later on that he fractured his collar bone.

This is a huge blow because he could be out for up to 8 weeks. Just our luck.

Either way, I’m going to be gutted when some of these players have to return to their parent clubs. They’ve all been a huge credit to us and helped us in our journey to start to rebuild.

I love Keith Hill’s strategy’s, determination and mindset. He has said that we will beat the bookies and he’s already doing that, so I am excited about the future of our club.

One thing that did baffle me last night was when Dennis Politic got substituted. He looked to the fourth official to check that it was actually him being subbed and gave a bit of a smirk which to me said he didn’t agree with the situation either.

I do understand that he’s a younger player who’s fitness needs to be put first and I am behind Hill, although, last night, it looked to me like Politic had a lot more to give. I think he would have benefited more from taking Verlinden off who was already on a yellow card.

That aside, we got a point, against Blackpool. We beat the odds again and I couldn’t be happier!

Bolton should line up like this tonight as they search for their first win under Hill

Bolton Wanderers Keith Hill

Keith Hill’s Bolton side are about to face Blackpool tonight. The Football Manc Cave is looking at how the Trotters side should line up.

Before the kick-off at the University of Bolton Stadium tonight at 8 pm, we are looking at which players should get to start in trying to keep Keith Hill’s sides performance strong.

They have proven recently that they’re turning things around and just looking at the transformation in their score sheets each week confirms that. They recently managed a draw with Rochdale in the Football League Trophy, after a 1-1, they only lost on penalties.

Their 1-0 loss to Portsmouth was unfortunate as it only came in the second half after a great performance again. Another frustrating scoreline was when they drew 1-1 with Sunderland, as it looked like they would take all three points until they gave a penalty away. Bolton’s first win is on the cards.

Blackpool is currently 5th in the league and are on 19 points. It’s going to be a hard match for Bolton, however, Blackpool’s most recent form looks like this; 2-1 win against Lincoln, 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley and won 1-0 against Doncaster. Even though they’re on good form, they’re not scoring loads of goals each week and it’s only small score sheets like 1-0 wins.

This is something Bolton could take advantage of and try to get a point out of it. Here’s how I think Keith Hill should line his team up…

Remi Matthews obviously deserves his place in goal and that won’t change. The defence should line up with Josh Emmanuel on the right, Yoan Zouma and Jack Hobbs in the middle and Adam Chicksen on the left. These four seem to do well together.

Jack Hobbs has had a great season so far and even though Yoan Zouma gave away the penalty against Sunderland. I think starting him is the right thing to do, it will help with his confidence and keep him going mentally.

Bolton’s midfield

In midfield, Liam Bridcutt obviously should go out as Captain in the middle as he’s proving to be a great leader and motivation for the rest of the midfield. Jason Lowe should accompany him with Ali Crawford and Will Buckley and Thibaud Verlinden on each wing.

Keith Hill has been working on fitness within the squad and even though Verlinden is excellent on the ball, he was replaced against Rochdale in the 61st minute by Dennis Politic. This is another sensible decision as the pair are both great additions to the team and should both be given a chance but we don’t want either to get injured.

Bolton attack

Upfront should be Daryl Murphy. He’s a new signing who has been out but now is fit again. He does have some competition now though however as Bolton signed Joe Dodoo this week.

If Keith Hill sticks to his sensible style of planning, he will probably keep him on the bench for his first game with the Whites and only bring him on in the second half but we will see later tonight.

Bolton boss excited by promising pair

The Bolton News has been busy working with Bolton Wanderers and keeping a close relationship with the new manager, Keith Hill. After Bolton suffered a 6-1 defeat to Rotherham, Hill asked some of his attacking players to get more defensive.

Dennis Politic and new signing Thibaud Verlinden have been very promising for the Trotters. The young pair have made a great opening impression on fans as their trickery on the ball has been exciting to see. They’ve both bagged goals already this season, Verlinden last week and Politic in a cup game. I’m sure there will be more to come.

However, Keith Hill has spoken with Marc Iles and explained how after the Rotherham game, the big loss had the new manager asking these attacking players to consider the whole performance. He’s gone on to say that he wants these players to contribute in every aspect to the team and get defensive when they need to.

Hill is excited by the pair and thinks that with the right training, getting more experience and better league preparation that they will both have great careers. He just wants to be careful which I think is quite sensible.

Plan to get over of the deficit

This now explains why Bolton managed to get a point out of the Oxford game. I trust that Keith Hill has a game plan and whatever he wants from his players he will be able to get. While some fans might get a bit sceptical about this arrangement because we finally have a style of play that includes trying to attack, it’s a sensible move from Hill because the minus points that we are in need to go.

If he keeps the style of play quite defensive until we are out of the minus points, then we can concentrate on attacking and trying to create goals in order to try and survive League one. These players have proved what they’re capable of already and have managed to impress so after Christmas, it will be great to see if their style of play has changed and if they’ve improved.

Bolton will run Sunderland close today with these players in the starting line up

Bolton managed to take their second point of the season from a goalless draw against Oxford this week. Keith Hill’s team will be looking to perform just as well against Sunderland this weekend.

Bolton had only managed to get one point so far this season and that took them to -11. On Tuesday night, they took on Oxford at home and managed to get another point. This seems like it’s the start of the season now for Bolton.

Keith Hill’s first game in charge saw Bolton go 1-0 up only to lose 6-1 against Rotherham. Now that we’ve have seen what the Bolton team is capable of against Oxford, there will be happier fans in the stadium this weekend. Sunderland currently sit 4th in the league on 15 points so this will be tough.

Team News:

With the 0-0 draw in mind, clearly the Trotters defence delivered a brilliant game and that showed when their two centre backs, Jack Hobbs and Jake Wright made the FLW League One Team Of The week.

These two will have to start against Sunderland in order to stand a chance. Josh Emmanuel also has been performing well at the back so should remain in the starting line up. Liam Bridcutt has been going out as Captain and this seems to be working well. He’s another player who fans and the league are keeping an eye on as he looks promising.

Thibaud Verlinden is enjoying his time with Bolton and got his professional goal for the club against Rotherham. He will be looking to get another in front of the home fans. Dennis Politic is also remaining in that starting line up which is something I’ve wanted despite having new signings.

Sunderland

Despite being 4th in the league, they only drew their last game against Rotherham 1-1. They’ve also suffered losses to Peterborough and the majority of their wins have been 2-1 score lines.

I think if Bolton plays as they did against Oxford, especially at the back, they might be able to give them a game. I’m not sure if a win will be on the cards but I’m hoping they can go out to get another point.

Keith Hill keeps Bolton fans in suspense over starting 11 against Rotherham, here’s how they should line up…

The Football Manc Cave is looking at how the newly bought Bolton Wanderers should line up this weekend.

Just like many other Bolton fans, I’ve been guessing at the starting line up that Keith Hill will put out against Rotherham on his first game in charge. Everything has been kept quite secret from the fans, and the anticipation is great. It’s like our season is just starting because we’ve got a new manager, new players and this weekends game will be exciting for fans.

We don’t even know the squad numbers of the new players yet so this will also be interesting. Fans know that Hill has a variety of new options to throw in the mix at Rotherham. However, fans are united in saying that the youngsters who kept playing for us throughout difficult times, should not be forgotten or left out of the squad.

I had a guess at what team Keith Hill would put out as soon as the new signings were announced. However, it’s recently been revealed that Joe Bunney, our new loanee left-back, has been involved in a car accident that has required us to look at other options for left-back.

So here’s my predicted 11…

New signing, Josh Emmanuel should be given a shot at right back to see how he copes, if things are going wrong, youngster Harry Brockbank can come on to pick up the pieces. Liam Edwards should go back into the central defence and help out fan favourite Yoan Zouma. The left-back position could be filled in by Joe White. However, Keith Hill might have a plan B that we don’t know about.

Dennis Politic

Luke Murphy and Jason Lowe remain experienced in the middle and supported by Ali Crawford on the left-wing, Thibaud Verlinden on the right and the very talented Dennis Politic who should be in the squad supporting the wingers and striker. Liam Bridcutt will more than likely be on the bench and can be brought on if needed.

Daryl Murphy is down as one to watch this weekend, most think he will be starting for the Wanderers and be alone up front. I agree and hope that we’ve been working hard on the training ground to be able to attack.

Whichever team Hill goes with, we need to earn points and get that goal difference down. However, it is just nice to be able to talk about and watch football again!

It’s all change at Bolton with this starting 11 going forward

The Football Manc Cave is looking at how Bolton Wanderers should line up now that they’ve had a host new signings and the youngsters can have a rest.

I am the first to say that changing an entire team around can be extremely dangerous to teams because players need time to gel together. However, Bolton has had it hard these first few months of the season and now that they have 9 new signings, it will be great to see them in action.

Keith Hill will be able to start afresh with new options and he’ll be able to make sure all the youngsters, who’re efforts will never be forgotten, can have some resting time to stay away from injury. So here is how I think we should line up in our next game…

I’ve picked quite a few new signings here because we need to explore our options. Personally, I have enjoyed seeing our young goalkeeper, Luke Hutchinson play, however, he does need rest and Remi Matthews will no doubt be called back into action.

Our starting point needs to be our defence with the goals we have been conceding. Although now that we have some more experienced options in all positions, it should be easier for our time to last 90 minutes and not get as tired. Yoan Zouma has become a fan favourite and should be kept in the squad. Harry Brockbank has also been outstanding, along with Adam Senior, but as I said, these kids need a rest.

This is where new signings, Joe Bunney and Josh Emmanuel come into play.

Midfield area

Jason Lowe will no doubt be back to Captain the Bolton squad along with Luke Murphy. Although I think Dennis Politic may be put on the bench and brought on later in games for the next few weeks while the youngsters rest. I do think he should be a regular in the team, even though we have new options. His efforts have been brilliant.

New signings Ali Crawford and Thibaud Verlinden should be used to fill spaces that the youngsters have been playing in. I just hope that we don’t over phase ourselves with newbies because it’s the first week with them in the squad.

And finally, new signing, Daryl Murphy should go alone upfront. While we need to try to be defensive at first, it would be great to see goals too. Fans wanted Murphy in the squad and we’re really happy when he was confirmed.

I hope that whatever squad Keith Hill picks, that it works out. Even though playing teenagers haven’t been the best and most appropriate start to the season. At least we’ve now prepared these youngsters in case we need them at any point, and I’m sure their efforts in recent weeks will be rewarded with more appearances as the season goes on.
