Man City star looks set to join David Beckham in the MLS

It’s old news that David Silva will be leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. Now there’s news on what he might do after his departure.

According to the Manchester Evening News, David Silva may join David Beckham’s new MLS franchise when he departs the Etihad Stadium. Apparently, Silva would be joining Inter Miami as their marquee foreign player next season.

He’s already stated in the past that after signing a one-year extension with Man City for this season that after he leaves, he wouldn’t join another Premier League team. With Beckham part owning the Miami side, he obviously gets a say in what’s happening. He is supposedly keen to bring in a Spanish speaking star to bring in Florida’s large Hispanic community.

The ex-Man United player and England captain had an option to buy an MLS expansion side written into his contract when he joined Los Angeles Galaxy 12 years ago. Beckham understands first hand what bringing in a globally successful player to an American side can do for its reputation. He’s been there and done that himself, and now he’s using that as a business strategy.

David Silva has become a legend for Man City and has helped them win a lot of competitions and league trophy’s over the years. He will fit the MLS bill perfectly but the 33-year-old will have to wait to get started. He will still be under contract at the Etihad when the season gets started in March in America.

Beckham on the hunt for talent

Beckham is on the hunt for stars to feature in his rising team and has recently been in Barcelona to try and track down wanted squad members. The names Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi have been whispered when it comes to this topic but I think Silva will be a more realistic option.

So, with Silva looking likely to leave the blues at the end of the year and Beckham on the hunt, could this be the journey that David Silva will now take? And who should Pep Guardiola bring in to replace him? Can he be replaced? I’m sure we will find out next year.

Will VAR drive Premier League fans to the EFL and Non-League for a real football fix

The introduction of VAR to the Premier League has caused as much controversy as expected. With money as the motive in every aspect of a business, it might not last much longer as fans are preferring lower-tier competitions in order to see some real football being played…

Football fans across England see VAR as a destructive tool of the game. The human error of referees had always been part of the sport, judging the performance of the referee came second to judging the performance of the players.

VAR, which stands for Virtual Assistant Referee, has killed the buzz of seeing your team score a goal, as you tend to have to wait for VAR to check the legitimacy of the goal.

With the billions and billions of pounds floating around the Premier League, fans fear that football is beginning to come second to the ‘Reality TV-like’ aspect to the modern game. VAR certainly adds to this.

As a result, lovers of the sport are preferring to watch lower-tier football. The EFL and non-league competitions have not had VAR introduced, and also have more of a focus on the football being played on the pitch as opposed to what happens off it, who took a penalty or what Pogba’s hair colour is etc.

In essence, it is a form of boycotting.

So what is bad about VAR?

Of course, and myself is no exception to this, VAR is only ever good when it favours the side you support. It is part of the natural biases and delusions of a football fan.

However, many European folks criticise American Football for its stop/start nature and claim that the sport isn’t gripping or exciting. This may well be the case for European football in the coming years as VAR takes over.

As it stands, VAR is necessary for decisions that are not absolutely clear to human referees. With arguments that VAR cannot be completely accurate, it completely avoids the need for it.

Former Man Utd man opts for Derby County over Burnley

With all the twists and turns of the transfer window, Derby County could be coming out as the ultimate winners with this massive former Man Utd legend signing.

Former Manchester United captain and current legend of football were spotted on an inbound flight to Heathrow Airport as talks of him in a shock return to English football heightened. That’s right, Wayne Rooney yesterday signed for Derby County after the MLS season has finished. The Englishman has taken a player-coach role with the Championship Rams.

Rooney has stated several times during the back-end of his career that he sees himself going into management.

After the 33-year-old showed the MLS the quality of the Premier League, he is likely still happy to keep his boots on. It would be a ‘two-birds, one-stone’ situation for Rooney to continue playing as well as learning the role of a coach. Particularly for a club in the country of which he sees his management taking place.

it was reported by the Burnley Express that Burnley, in particular, were interested in the goal scorer. Bringing in the most successful goalscorer from the most successful club in the country may not have been too bad of an idea. However, Derby quickly sealed the deal but what experience would he bring to the Rams?

What can Rooney bring to Derby County?

Rooney is Man United’s record goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances. He is also England’s record goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances. Having been a professional football at the highest of levels for going on 18 years, Rooney will impact the club off and on the pitch. With a new manager, Philip Cocu, and on the back of a great season, bringing in a leader like Wayne Rooney will allow the team the establish what kind of quality they are after.

Achieving Derby County promotion or moving Burnley up towards the middle of the table would be fantastic for Rooney’s CV. It appears Rooney has set out to spend his remaining days on the pitch learning to coach. This demonstration of maturity proves that the English net-buster is well on his way to becoming a fine manager, something many would have laughed at ten years ago.

Whether it be this year or next. We will see Wayne Rooney back in English football. Will it be as a player, a player-coach or a full-blown manager?

The Punters Best Friend is here again with another statistical MLS betting masterclass.

Check out below the highlighted matches we are going to cover in greater detail and our tips for each match…

TORONTO to win vs Houston Dynamo 3-0

Finally, Toronto has started to build up some momentum, they have been the MLS’s yo-yo team this year who just can’t seem to get three wins on the bounce. However, they can do just that this weekend against a struggling Houston Dynamo who got spanked 5-0 last week.

Philadelphia Union & Chicago Fire BTTS 2-1

Philadelphia lost heavily in their last game to a strong Salt Lake side who somehow managed to put 4 goals past them. They were away from home though, so I think in front of their home crowd they should do the business. They are prone to conceding however, so I think both teams to score is the best bet.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES to win vs Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0

San Jose is beating some high profile teams this season, and that should be no different on this occasion against a bottom of the table Vancouver Whitecaps. San Jose currently sits in 5th position and could slingshot themselves up into 3rd if results go their way. Vancouver has lost four games back to back and conceded 14 goals in the process. They sit bottom of the table and rightfully so. I think they’ll put up a fight but I wouldn’t expect miracles.

LA Galaxy vs Los Angeles FC over 2.5 goals 2-3

Los Angeles is the favourites to lift the MLS Cup this year, they’re form this season has been second to none. They come up against Zlatan though who lives for the big stage. I think Los Angeles will get the win but the safest bet would be over 2.5 goals.

FC Cincinnati vs New England Revolution over 2.5 goals 1-3

FC Cincinnati’s season is pretty much over, they’re just playing for pride now with the home crowd I fancy them to grab a goal. New England, however, is looking to make the playoffs. So a win here could move them from 8th into 5th.

Here is the Punters Best Friend accumulator for tonight’s MLS matches.

Orlando City vs Columbus Crew

Orlando city managed to pull off a shock last week by drawing 2-2 with top of the table Philadelphia union away from home.

Nani is in impressive form so far this season and I think his technical ability will be too much for a colombus crew side who have lost their last four games.

Orlando managed to beat Colombus Crew in their last meeting 2-0 away from home. So with home advantage I see them doing this business in this one.

My prediction:

Orlando city 2-0 Columbus Crew

Nani to score at any time.

Portland Timbers vs Colorado Rapids

Portland Timbers beat New York City away from home in their last outing, mind you it wasn’t a convincing win they were dominated for most of the game but still managed to hold onto a 1-0 win.

Colorado rapids aren’t in terrible form but they’re facing the Timbers at the worst possible time.

I can imagine Portland with home advantage and the confidence they picked up from their last game will be enough to see it through.

My prediction:

Portland Timbers 2-1 Colorado Rapids

Over 2.5 goals

New York Red Bulls vs New York City

Anything can happen in a derby but I think both will be hungry to score some goals so my safe bet is both teams to score.

My prediction:

2-2

Both teams to score

Real Salt Lake vs Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia somehow conceded 2 goals to a weakened Orlando side last week so being away from home I can see them conceding a goal or two.

My prediction:

1-1

Both Teams to score

Chicago Fire vs FC Cincinnati

FC Cincinnati started this season very strong but cracks started to appear and they’ve been in a decline ever since. They somehow managed to pull of a 3-2 victory over Houston Dynamo last week. But the week before that they were spanked 7-1 but Minnesota.

Chicago Fire love to entertain especially when at home so my bet is…

My prediction:

Chicago fire 3-1 FC Cincinnati

Both teams to score.
