Rochdale’s 17y/o star being eyed up by Man Utd, Man City & Newcastle Utd for a January move

Rochdale defender Luke Matheson is being linked with a number of Premier League clubs with Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle all thought to be monitoring the 17-year-old, who has been tipped to have a big future.

Matheson made his senior debut for Rochdale at the age of just 15 when they faced Bury in the EFL Trophy, at the time becoming their youngest ever debutant. He was awarded the Man of Match award that night in what was an impressive display for his age.

Since his opening appearance, the youngster has gone to make 15 league appearances for Dale as he is now a regular in Brian Barry-Murphy’s team. The right-back enjoys driving forward, therefore, he is often involved in attacking plays his side produce.

The highlight of Matheson’s career so far came earlier this season in the Carabao Cup when he scored at Old Trafford against Manchester United to level the game at 1-1. Unfortunately for his side, they eventually lost on penalties to miss out on the giant-killing that night, however, all the headlines were about the ‘Rochdale wonderkid’ the next day.

Matheson recently signed his first professional contract with Rochdale in a three-year-deal. He is another product of the academy at the Greater Manchester club who have produced so many players who have gone on to play at a higher level. He has been at the club since the age of nine, so he is a real success story for their youth system.

Back in February, Matheson was called up into the England under-17 squad to face France where he started in the Three Lions’ 3-2 victory. He recently represented his country at an under-18 level too in games against Poland and Slovakia, the latter who they beat 1-0 on the road, so he is a player who is clearly rated by those who monitor young English players in this country.

Rochdale have made a mixed start to their League One campaign this season where they are 50/1 in the football betting to finish in the top six at the end of the 2018/19 campaign. Matheson is expected to continue to play lots of football as manager Barry-Murphy is not afraid to give the young players in his squad an opportunity to shine.

Higher hopes for Dale

Dale was in a relegation scrap last season but managed to survive with a late surge up the table at the end of the campaign. They are expected to finish much higher this season and still have hopes of finishing in the top six.

Newcastle has reportedly been scouting Matheson since January where they were initially impressed with his talent. Given his goal at Old Trafford though back in September, the two Manchester giants are also thought to now be interested in keeping him in the North West.

If a move for Matheson is made in either the January transfer window or next summer, he could be immediately loaned back to Rochdale in order to continue playing League One football which will help his progression at such a young age.

Rochdale need their defence to look like this tonight to stop Ipswich Town

Rochdale face Ipswich tonight at home. After a loss to Bristol Rovers last weekend, they’ll be looking for a win.

Brian Barry Murphy will be looking for his side to boince back tonight and react. Dale lost to Bristol, 2-1 at the weekend.

They went 2-0 down in the first half and Eoghan O’Connell even scored an own goal.

Fans were frustrated at half time but Dale’s second half performance definitely improved. Callum Camps managed to pull a goal back but it wasn’t enough.

With that in mind, this is how Rochdale’s defence should line up tonight if they want to stand a chance…

Left back: Rhys Norrington-Davies

The 20 year old has got big responsibilities for his age. However, he has adapted well.

This may be a tougher game for him as Ipswich are 2nd in League One. Rochdale are currently 14th.

Centre back: Paul McShane

The 33 year old only joined Rochdale a few weeks ago. However, he has made such a good impact at the back.

He is acting as a leader as his experience proves that he knows what he’s doing.

Centre back: Eoghan O’Connell

The 24 year old scored an own goal against Bristol last weekend. However, he shouldn’t be dropped tonight.

If Brian Barry-Murphy was to leave him out of the squad tonkght, it would completely knock his confidence.

Right back: Luke Matheson

The 17 year old didn’t play against Bristol so he could be featured tonight. He will be rested enough.

Jimmy Keohane played in this position last weekend. He is naturually a midfielder so he could be swapped tonight.

Man United & Man City go head-to-head for Rochdale star youngster

According to the Daily Star, both Manchester sides are going after Luke Matheson. Although, it looks like Man United and Man City might not be the only Premier League sides after the teenager.

The England Under 18’s defender made his League debut at aged just 15.

He’s now attracting interest from across the Premier League.

Apparently, the list of scouts from top flight clubs going to watch the youngster is getting longer every week. Rochdale now fear that they might not be able to keep hold of the teenager past January.

Man United fans will remember his name mainly because he scored against them in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.

Man City

Machester City would want to add him to the youth ranks and help him develop.

Pep Guardiola is apparently a fan of the teenager and he has an eye for spotting talent.

Man United

Man United are looking for young Talent as they are also interested in developing youth players.

They’ve also been known for trying to sign younger players rather than more experience ones.

Rochdale

However, something Rochdale can offer the 17-year old is game time.

Matheson can’t be guaranteed weekly football with top flight clubs yet but Dale can. That might be enough to keep the teenager a little longer.

Shrewd signing: What will 33y/o bring to Rochdale

Rochdale have recruited defender, Paul McShane. Brian Barry-Murphy has spoken on how signing the 33-year-old was something he couldn’t turn down. The Football Manc Cave look at what he will bring to BBM’s side.

The Republic of Ireland international has joined Dale on a short term plan through till January. His experience is something that Brian Barry-Murphy was after.

BBM has also said that it has been a difficult period for him. This comes after injuries that have been picked up throughout his squad. However, 17-year-old Luke Matheson has stepped up in recent weeks.

The teenager even bagged a goal against Manchester United. Now it’s time for a refreshing player like McShane to come in and lead the backline.

Not Afraid

In his first interview with the side, he spoke on how he won’t be afraid to be vocal. He knows he has to lead by example and has admitted that he is a bit of a shouter at times.

The ex Reading player wants to give Rochdale everything he’s got and play as much football as he can. Hopefully, he will be an effective tool that transforms Dale’s style of play.

Great Shape

Brian Barry-Murphy is also excited by the fact that the 33-year-old is in great shape. Not just physically but also mentally too. McShane also carries himself in a way that befits a top-level footballer according to the Dale boss.

This is something that he is hoping will have an impact on other players. The Dale boss thought he owed it to the squad to bring someone like that in.

Experience

As already mentioned, McShane has been around. He started off at Manchester United but then had spells at West Brom, Sunderland, Hull and Crystal Palace.

Over the course of his career, he has picked up skill, strength and determination. This is something Rochdale needs. His qualities could also rub off on other squad members. However, when January comes and the contract is up, recruitment will be key.

It’s clear that BBM & Rochdale needs to strengthen this area in January

Brian Barry-Murphy started off this season looking promising. Some performances have recently taken a back seat. Now there’s a talking point of which part of the squad needs improving.

Rochdale currently sits at 19th on 10 points. However, at that early stages of this season, the performances looked good enough. Especially with Brain Barry-Murphy being new to the role.

Even though Dale started off the season suffering losses, they were still looking effective and were scoring goals. Since then, it has been a bit up and down. For example, they beat Southend one week 3-0 and then lost to Peterborough 6-0.

One of the highlights of the season so far was when they managed a draw with Man United in the Carabao Cup. They went on to get knocked out on penalties but it was a brilliant attempt from the squad.

To keep earning points and making sure performances are tight, this is the area that BBM should work on in January…

Defence

When Rochdale do concede, it seems to be a fair few that get past them. Fans have recently been commenting on how there’s a lot of pressure on 17-year-old Luke Matheson.

He’s a fan favourite for his goal against Man United. However, he’s very young to have such a role and be expected to keep up with League One football.

Brian Barry-Murphy clearly agrees as he has recruited an experienced defender. Paul McShane has joined the side for a short term.

While he’s experienced and self admittedly ready to lead the back four, he only has a contract until January. Hopefully, he will be able to guide the defence in his time with the Dale. The manager will then have to find someone who can pick up where he left off, in January.

Three players who must impress BBM against Hyde tonight for Rochdale

As most teams pre-season campaign comes to a close, The Football Manc Cave are looking at Rochdale to see which players should look to impress in their last friendly against Hyde United.

A very organised Brian Barry-Murphy has already picked out his squad that will play against Hyde. It’s a very youthful Dale side, although he can afford to put out an inexperienced team to give himself and fans an insight into the youngsters in the team.

This also gives the senior squad a rest ahead of the start of the season. The line up picked out consists of, Wade, Matheson, Kinsella, Lee, Dunne, Clarkson, Chorlton, Gillam, Moreland, Bradley and Tavares. Before this team gets underway at Ewen Fields, here’s three of the squad members who should look to impress their manager and the fans.

Bradley Wade

Wade is a 19-year-old goalkeeper who has come through the ranks at Rochdale and has been with the club since he was 15 years old. He’s been a key member of the youth squads at Dale and now that he has become a senior squad member, he will be looking to impress.

Another factor that will influence his performance is that Rochdale has recently signed Robert Sanchez on loan from Brighton, and he has recently started a friendly for the club. This knocks Wade further down in the pecking order for Brian Barry Murphy’s choices. This should mean that Wade will be looking to put on his best performance against Hyde.

Luke Matheson

The 16-year-old has had a good career so far, as he’s had 2 senior appearances already for Dale and he has appeared for England’s Under 17’s team once. The defender is obviously very young, however, he will be looking to impress. He will want to boost his own playing experience and he will also want to get a chance at regular football.

If Matheson can show what he’s capable of, he could gain credit from his current manager, interest from other clubs with him being so young and also interest from England’s other youth teams.

Fabio Tavares

Another young player who will be looking to prove himself. He only signed his first professional contract this summer with Dale along with Harrison Hopper and Lewis Bradley. Tavares has also been with the club since he was 15 and has been a big part of the youth squads. He has bagged over 40 goals throughout his two-year scholarship.

Now that he is part of the senior squad, he will be looking to impress not only the fans but Brian Barry Murphy and the team. Lewis Bradley has also been named in the squad to face Hyde so the pair will hopefully be able to show how they can produce good football together.

Keith Hill Focusing On One Area is The Key To Dale Climbing League One

Rochdale are having a tough time of it in League One at the moment, currently sitting three places and three points above the relegation zone.

With only two wins in the last nine league games to boast, it’s no wonder Keith Hill’s side find themselves in the lower ebbs of the third tier of English Football.

Qualifying for the next rounds of the FA Cup and Checkatrade trophy has slightly improved spirits, but on the whole Dale fans are feeling frustrated. Despite many believing that this current crop of Rochdale players is the best, the club has had for a long time.

Having conceded 11 goals in nine league games since the start of October, alongside averaging one goal per game – there is one area that is glaringly obvious to improve if Hill wants to start getting his team moving upwards in League One.

A rotation of goalkeepers haven’t helped the situation, but the defence is something of a leaky bucket at present.

Hill has some emerging talent at his feet, but it’s far too early to be relying on the likes of Luke Matheson just yet, despite the promise and excitement. At the moment, Hill should be concentrating on his first team and possibly looking towards the January transfer window to strengthen and bolster, what is a very unstable backline.

Rochdale Fans do you agree?
