Southampton’s defence needs to line up like this to halt Man City

Southampton will face Man City this weekend for the second time this week. They will be looking to make improvements to stop Man City scoring too many.

With the two sides facing each other twice this week, they will both kind of know what to expect from one another.

However, they will also both be looking to improve their performances.

Man City will be looking to win to close the gap between them and Liverpool. Southampton will be looking for any points to try and get them further up the league.

With that in mind, here is how Southampton should line up their defence to try and keep Man City from repeating their last performance…

Left back: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

The Southampton Captain obviously has to be on the pitch.

He will hopefully lead his team to a strong performance. After all, Southampton should have some confidence because they actually scored against Man City earlier in the week.

Centre back: Jack Stephens

In the game earlier this week, Southampton put out 5 defenders with 3 centre backs in the mix.

They should definitely do this again because they’ll need to be strong at the back. Jack Stephen’s also got Southampton’s only goal this week.

Centre back: Kevin Danso

The 21 year old seemed to switch off at times earlier in the week. However, it might have been related to the fact that Southampton’s confidence isn’t high.

Hopefully, now that he knows what to expect this weekend, he will remain focussed.

Centre back: Jan Bednarek

The final centre back position shoulf be Bednarek. Not only can he focus on his own game, he will be able to offer Danso some help.

Having 5 at the back will also allow them to cover any other positions if needed.

Right back: Yan Valery

The final position should be taken by Valery. I can imagine that even if the formation is changed, Valery would still be in the line up.

However, if anything is going wrong, Jake Vokins got a couple of minutes earlier in the week. Maybe bringing him on earlier will change things up.
