Just in case you didn’t catch the Lionesses in arguably their most controversial match yet, Phil Neville’s team managed to win 3-0 and bag a place in the quarter-finals where they will play Norway.
Last night’s match broke viewing records for a Women’s game and with the win, this should have been a great moment for the movement in Women’s football. However, if you didn’t catch it, you should definitely have a look at the highlights to see how you think England handled the game.
VAR has been a huge part of this World Cup with referees not being able to make decisions. I wrote about how I thought Steph Houghton would have to lead the England team into the next rounds, by keeping us out of arguing with the referee and getting into VAR debates.
Last night saw England players get spat on, tackled awfully and then, have VAR goals awarded but the Cameroon players were refusing to play, crying, screaming at Steph Houghton when she was on the floor injured. Although it is good to see that there’s a lot of people behind them as though go into the next stage.
If you do get a chance to see the game, it’s worth listening to what Phil Neville has to say afterwards too. He basically stated that the game didn’t feel good, and it was being broadcasted to many young people who should be inspired, instead of getting a negative representation of football.
