Alex Newby is a forward that will surely excite Rochdale fans in the upcoming season.
Joining from Chorley FC, the 24-year-old will be looking to impress as he breaks into professional football with a club he has had his “heart set on coming to for a long time”…
Newby joined from the Magpies of Chorley on a two-year deal. He’s got over 90 games experience at Victory Park and played a pivotal role in their recent promotion.
Apparently, Rochdale have had their sights on Newby for quite a while, but formal negotiations were halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Whilst Newby continues to impress his new manager Brian Barry-Murphy in training and with a winning goal against local rivals Oldham Athletic in their recent pre-season friendly. The youngster could not speak highly enough about his new boss: “He is the type of Manager that I want to work with, and I can’t wait to do that”.
Rochdale haven’t shuffled around the EFL League One pack too much since their 9th place finish in the 16/17 season. Since then, they have failed to score enough goals to have a positive goal difference and have finished between 16th and 20th in each season since.
Taking a risk by signing Newby could be a clear indication that Rochdale are trying to break out of their stagnation.
Newby is reuniting with an old coach of his, Lee Riley, who coached him in the Morecombe Youth Academy. Having such an insight on their new star could allow him to hit the ground running, which he has given evidence to merely weeks after joining the club.
Therefore, Newby has to focus on performing under the demands of League One football, and his coaching staff will take care of him reaching the heights they believe he can.
