Another season goes by, a ton of money spent to get Manchester United closer to the top. The more money that’s spent the farther it seems the Red Devils are from being title contenders.
2019/2020 was disappointing in many ways, we could sit through the whole day highlighting what could have been. For me, the just-concluded season demonstrated just one thing; that it is important to get your signings in quickly.
You can imagine what would have been if Man United had signed Bruno Fernandes in the Summer like it was rumoured. Has there been a more significant winter window transfer? So just consider his impact at Old Trafford since signing in January and take your mind back to how poor the team was in the first half of the season.
Nothing else demonstrates why it is imperative to get your transfer targets in, settled, and ready to go. So with the lessons supposedly learnt; I expect Manchester United to move very quickly to address key areas of deficiency in the team.
Ed Woodward and his team of ”transfer gurus” need to as a matter of urgency; address 4 critical areas in the team.
Man Utd Defence
The defence needs work, though 130 Million pounds was spent on it last summer. A left-back and another centre back are priorities. Luke Shaw is not consistent enough, so I would bring in someone to battle it out with him.
For me, take a look at Robin Gosens from Atalanta, defends well, intelligent, mobile, and has an eye for goal. For a wing back he has scored nine Serie A goals this season, I cannot remember the last time a Man United full-back contributed two goals to the course.
At centre back, Inter’s Milan Skriniar ticks all the right boxes; neat in possession and a good tackler; something United needs badly.
Man Utd Midfield
Right in front of the defence, a defensive midfielder should also be sort. Nemanja Matic has been brilliant since the restart, but I can’t trust him with an entire season. Injuries and loss of form are the banes of a plus 30 player, a younger, energetic option is needed.
Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi has been the top defensive midfielder in the Premier League for the last three years; he fits the bill.
Man Utd Attack
Upfront, the trio of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood have had an excellent season. However, that trio needs a little bit more invention and not just finishing attributes. This is where I think the signing of Jadon Sancho makes a lot of sense and should be the priority.
Squad depth was pushed to the limit after the restart especially quality off the bench. Not having options that can turn a game on its head from the bench, is partly what separates title contenders from also-rans.
The Red Devils need to invest in improving the overall quality in the squad’s depth. To do this, obviously, there will be at least three departures to ensure you strike the right balance. Ed Woodward and his band of merry men need to get to work and fast to ensure that United are punching in the right weight class.
