Manchester United looking to hijack Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo as they enter the race for Roma’s midfielder.
With regards to the type of players Manchester United have been linked with, it is clear that Solskjaer wants defenders and midfielders.
Reds had issues last season with turning defence into midfield possession, and midfield possession into an attack. In this summer window, it is important that Solskjaer gets hold of a ball-playing centre-half and a creative midfielder.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United are now in for Roma’s midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo. The 20-year-old joined Roma in July of last year for a swap deal involving Radja Nainggolan.
The Italian coped with the pressure of 36 appearances last season, including 7 in the Champions League. He finished with 6 goals and 2 assists.
Manchester United already have many young and high-quality players who can perform in midfield. Andreas Perriera, Angel Gomes, Scott McTominay and James Garner are all looking to have promising futures at Old Trafford.
However, with this in mind, it must mean that Zaniolo can offer this Man Utd squad something the rest can’t if the reports of interest are true.
Is it Bruno Fernandes or Zaniolo?
Portuguese man Bruno Fernandes has appeared to be top of Manchester United’s wishlist over recent weeks. The reports circulating about Zaniolo could likely be a result of Man Utd increasing their midfield transfer options this summer. Perhaps there is a disagreement in the deal for Bruno, or maybe he has become impatient with the slow progress from Man Utd.
Both players would offer a similar balance to the Man Utd midfield, and unless Zaniolo is expected to be a bench player, it is unlikely that the Reds will go through with both deals.
Only time will tell which of the two partners up with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay next season. If either player joined, the Man Utd outfit would definitely be stronger than in recent years.
