It’s rumoured that City are interested in signing Spanish keeper, Asier Riesgo but who is he?
Pep Guardiola is looking at the 35-year-old, as Nottingham Forest are meant to be after signing Aro Muric on a long term loan deal. The 20-year-old had to return to City last season earlier than expected from NAC Breda after Claudio Bravo suffered an injury. The keeper is supposed to be the replacement that fits the bill.
Riesgo started at Real Sociedad where he worked with the current Man City goalkeeper coach, Xabier Mancisidor. He is now out of contract and can move on a free transfer.
His history is no surprise to why City are now looking at him. In 2004, he was on loan from Real Sociedad to Eibar where he played for one and a half seasons until, he was recalled from his loan duties as Sander Westerveld, Sociedad’s first choice keeper, had an injury. He then became a starter in the La Liga until 2006/07 season when he battled with the newly signed Claudio Bravo for the team starting spot.
Sociedad were relegated the same season which resulted in Asier playing all 42 league games the following season. Unfortunately, they could not return to top flight football.
August 2008 came around and he was then loaned to Recreativo de Huelva and in January he stopped two penalty kicks. In April he also became the first ever to deny Lionel Messi a penalty. This gained him some interest in 2009 from Tottenham, as they were looking at cover for Carlo Cudicini after their keeper was in a motorbike accident. He’s since been with CA Osasuna but returned to Eibar in 2015.
So he’s already played with Claudio Bravo and had an impressive career. Pep knows who to look at and City fans trust his tactics and signings. This would also be a good move for the 35-year-old.
