I cannot begin to imagine how many young players there are in this country who find themselves loaned to teams a good distance from home and in some cases, like Oldham’s Courtney Duffus shipped off to another country.
Signed by former manager John Sheridan to keep up the competition for places, Courtney wasn’t able to make an immediate impact due to injury.
His early career started as a youth player with Everton and he is currently at Waterford FC who are lying fourth in the Irish Premier Division just outside the qualifying places for the Europa League.
His move there ends in early November when the Irish season finishes and he has managed to make something of an impact by scoring 10 goals in 24 appearances.
Whether that will be enough to see him challenging for a place up front for the rest of Latics League Two campaign remains to be seen, but he has certainly been given enough match practice.
With such a small squad, Latics might have to rely on players like Duffus to get them into contention for a playoff place at the end of the season.
