The Manchester United team that completed the 2019/2020 season is in need of major defensive reinforcements. Every day on the pages of newspapers, phone-in shows, social media, etc; you will find stories linking United to this or that player.
The Red Devils under the guidance of Ed Woodward have had haphazard transfer negotiations post Sir Alex. This news of a possible bid for Brazilian defender, Gabriel dos Santos Magalhães is definitely out of the left field and unusual if you consider the types of deals Man United have done over the years.
Who is Gabriel?
That will be the question many United fans will be asking as we speak. Now YouTube is not the best tool to judge a player’s ability nor are stats.
Well, he is Brazilian to start with, hopefully, he is as good as some of the defenders that have come out that country of late. Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Lucio, etc. At 22 years of age, he is a product of the Avai academy in Brazil and has had to work his way up. From several loan deals at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb to eventually establishing himself at Lille.
With a total of 30 appearances in all competitions, including the Champions League; he has the right experience and the know-how to fit in at United. With him at the heart of the defence with Captain Harry Maguire; he brings assurance, calm, and concentration.
Gabriel is a good tackler and is superb in the air. Two key areas that have somewhat been lacking in the United defence especially tackling. The young man is disciplined, with only three yellow cards for the aborted Ligue 1 season. Compare that with United’s first-choice pairing, who have six yellow cards each; the young man would be a welcomed addition.
The manager has said a few times that he is in the market for a left-footed centre back, Gabriel is left-footed, hence his package is complete.
