Jonathan Hogg is attracting interest from Wigan and Sheffield United, with the midfielder having just one year left on his contract at Huddersfield. A potential move away might tempt him into leaving The Terriers.
The 30-year-old has made 194 appearances in his six-year stint at The Yorkshire based club. Hogg is predominantly a defensive midfielder, who likes to win the ball back, work hard and drive forward to start attacks. After rarely featuring last season and approaching the final year of his contract, he could be looking for a long-term deal and first-team football for the remaining years of his career.
He would be a top signing for Wigan and slot alongside Sam Morsy no problem. It’s impossible to replace Reece James, he was that good, however, Hogg would fill the attributes that James possessed. A ‘ball-winning’ midfielder that is also a good footballer, one thing he brings that James didn’t – experience. We’ve got a relatively young, inexperienced squad, having Hogg and Morsy at the heart of our midfield could be massive. Alan Hutton is also a reported target, another player that brings a wealth of experience.
I’d be very impressed and excited for the new season if we got this Hogg deal over the line. He’s the exact type of player we need – experienced at this level, a quality player, at a good age and cheap. Some fans are worried about the lack of transfer activity at Wigan, the season is over five weeks away, most teams haven’t even returned for pre-season yet, let’s not panic buy and make sure we buy quality over quantity.
Imagine a midfield of Morsy and Evans, with Jacobs, Windass and Massey upfront. Play-offs here we come.
