“He’s a ‘keeper!” Oldham Athletic Fans React To Signing Another Non-French Player

One of the problems facing whoever is responsible for building Oldham’s side for the coming season is finding a suitable replacement for last season’s hero Daniel Iversen.

The doom and gloom merchants were convinced that we would either end up with the untried Zeus de la Paz or sign some French second tier ‘keeper who nobody had heard of. In fact, with the acquisition of defender Zak Mills earlier in the week, Latics have signed two very un-French sounding players.

Rather stating the obvious, the club introduced Gary Woods to the fans on Tuesday.

Woods has been tempted to Boundary Park from Hamilton Academical, where his contract had expired and arrives after being given a two-year deal. His previous clubs include Ross County, Doncaster and Orient and the 28-year-old stated in his first interview that he was looking forward to a fresh challenge and putting down roots in the area for himself and his young family.

Quite unusually for Athletic, they appear to have snatched him from under the noses of fellow League Two side Exeter.

Back in February, Woods made a spectacular save against Partick Thistle late in the game which got him into the SPFL team of the week.

Oldham fans have been quick to point out that this represents a decent signing given that he has played most of his football at a higher level. The opinions on one forum seem favourable.

If Gary turns out to have a season anything like the one Daniel Iversen had, he will have certainly shown that the club has made a wise decision in getting his signature.
