Tonight, League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic travel to Notts County. Both teams are desperately short of form and, will be looking to this fixture as a chance to kick-start their season.
The once bright mood around the Latics camp has noticeably dulled in recent weeks, with many calling for the managers head. Tonight’s game really does have an air of ‘now or never’ about it for Mr Bunn.
In recent press conferences, he has appeared angry and nervous with most, perceiving this as a man who knows his days are numbered.
The problems at Oldham really do stem much wider than the playing side, but it is hard to ignore Bunn’s stubbornness in team selection and tactics.
It’s hard not to paint a doom and gloom picture for Latics these days. Cash flow issues have become something of the norm, but now pretty much all hope of a promotion push seems lost.
Novembers fixtures are as tough as it gets. Away trips to Notts County and Tranmere are hard enough, without throwing in an FA Cup trip to Hampton and Richmond and a chance to be humiliated live on TV. If those fixtures aren’t enough we still have to host league leaders Lincoln and a resurgent Cambridge side that are currently on a three-game winning streak.
All in all that means tonights trip to County, albeit tough, is surely a must win.
With those fixtures and mounting pressure, it’s virtually impossible that Frankie Bunn will still be the main man come December.
To make matters worse, it doesn’t appear there are many queuing up to take his place. Unlike recent times when the names reportedly interested were of high notability, this time all seems quiet. The seemingly poisoned chalice of the Oldham hot seat has finally made a name for itself.
At least it’s nearly Christmas though!
Surely another Shezurrection isn’t on the cards?
