Give them minutes: Sunderland must simply give these 2 outcasts the opportunity to shine tonight

Sunderland travels to Bramall Lane tonight, to face Sheffield United in the third round of the EFL Cup. The Wearsiders dumped out Premier League side Burnley in the last round, defeating them 1-3 at Turf Moor.

With Sunderland only managing to scrape a point from Bolton Wanderers, thanks to a 92nd-minute penalty from Aiden McGeady, Jack Ross is under increasing pressure from their fans. After the club failed in their promotion bid last campaign, it’s imperative they achieve it this season, and so far it’s been more of the same. 1-1 draws.

The cup presents a healthy distraction, and a chance for Ross to get the fans back on side if they can progress to the fourth round tonight.

So, let’s have a look at a couple of players that may get a chance tonight…

Dylan McGeouch

Ross made Grant Leadbitter his captain, following the departure of George Honeyman to Hull City in the summer. The midfielder has struggled, particularly away from home, just too slow and negative on the ball. McGeouch is Sunderland’s best midfielder according to many but rarely features. A player that wants the ball, looks to move the ball forward and quickly which is what they need.

Will Grigg

The most expensive League One signing in history, and he can’t buy a goal. It’s one of them, if he scores a goal, it might just give him that confidence to score a hatful. He’s missing chances that he would’ve scored in his sleep at Wigan Athletic, whether it’s his confidence, desire, the service he’s getting is another question – but Sunderland need to find a way of getting him firing soon, or they’ll be settling for the play-offs again.

Portsmouth fans not downhearted following derby defeat ‘Underserved but that’s the difference in quality there’

It was a big night in the Carabao Cup last night. The Football Manc Cave are focussing on your reactions to Portsmouth’s loss.

Unfortunately, Pompey’s run in the Carabao Cup was put to an end last night when they suffered a 4-0 loss to Southampton. Even though they suffered a blow, the fans that attended the game gave it their all and kept on making as much noise as possible until the very end.

With Portsmouth being in League one and Southampton in the Premier League, it was always going to be a highly attended game with a loud and great atmosphere. To add to this, it was also a highly anticipated South Coast Derby.

Despite the result, fans are still proud. Here are your reactions…

What are Blackburn Rovers getting from former Wigan Athletic ‘keeper

Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of Christian Walton, on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dan, from The Football Manc Cave, looks at what the young ‘keeper will offer Rovers next season.

Well, in the two seasons he was at Wigan Athletic, we won a league title and secured safety in the Championship, and he’s been a big part of that – so he’s done well.

Future England No1?

Walton is very highly regarded at Brighton and tipped not only to be their number one in a few years, but also England’s. He signed a five-year contract last year, before signing for us on loan again.

In all honesty, Walton has a lot of learning to do, however, he’s becoming more and more experienced, while playing at a good level. He started last season very well, contributing to our brilliant home form.

Against Leeds Utd at home, live on Sky surprisingly, he made a howler and we lost the game 1-2. Since then, he was never the same. His confidence looked shot and he was actually dropped for a short time.

I’m no goalkeeping expert, however, as a fan sitting in the stands, he never filled with me with a great detail of confidence. He’s just not commanding or brave enough, there were crosses coming into his six-yard box, and he was glued to his line. Similarly, if through balls are a touch heavy from the opposing team, Walton was very slow to recognise that.

The 23 year-olds best attribute is undoubtedly his shot-stopping. Outstanding. From close or long-range, he’s brilliant at getting down and has very strong hands. On the other hand, his kicking is poor. His goal-kicks are average, but dealing with back-passes is a big problem as he just seems to panic.

I think Walton has a good future ahead of him. It’s a move that will benefit all parties, he’ll do a solid job for Blackburn, and head back to Brighton a better player.

Blackburn Rovers eye up a move for Man City’s 21y/o defender

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn Rovers are lining up a loan move for Man City defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Championship rival West Bromwich Albion, playing 36 times as The Baggies reached the play-offs, finishing fourth, before losing to arch-rivals Aston Villa in the semi-finals on penalties.

Adarabioyo is predominantly a central defender, playing much of his Man City youth days in this position. However, he lined up as a right-back for the majority of the last campaign, proving his versatility and ability to play across the back four.

A move for the Premier League youngster is believed to be nearing completion. Tony Mowbray has so far added Stewart Downing, Bradley Johnson and Sam Gallagher to his ranks, Adarabioyo would be Rovers’ first loan signing of the summer.

Mowbray saw his side concede 69 goals in 46 league matches last season, including having the leakiest away defence in the league. The departures of Paul Downing and Jack Rodwell will force the boss to strengthen his defensive options.

Adarabioyo would add height and physicality to a threadbare Rovers backline. He’s very confident on the ball, and happy to both attack and defend if playing full back.

Rovers have so far added quality and experience, in particular with the signings of Downing and Johnson. Gallagher was an expensive buy, however, has bags of potential and now the move is permanent, has a chance to really express himself and make the number nine spot his own.

Perhaps Mowbray is on the hunt for young talent on loan, who can freshen up his experienced side, providing him with a selection headache for their opening match on August 3rd. Adarabioyo would kick-off this trend, the youngster would be a good signing for Blackburn.

Is former Man City striker heading back to the Premier League with West Ham United?

According to The Mirror, former Man City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli could be on his way to West Ham.

West Ham have suffered enough this transfer window. Callum Wilson has been a player who The Hammers have kept an eye on all summer and he has now opted to stay at Bournemouth. Maxi Gomez was also a target who has now opted to move to Valencia rather than the Premier League. This summer has also seen the departures of Lucas Pérez, Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic.

This leaves West Ham now in need of recruits. The Mirror has reported that Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been offered free agent, Mario Balotelli. The odds have been favouring more and more towards the striker signing for the Hammers over the past few days.

When you look at Balotelli as a footballer, yes, definitely go ahead and sign him. He could be highly beneficial to West Ham and he would deliver as he’s used to the Premier League. However, the club, manager and fans have to consider Mario’s off-pitch reputation.

Man City days

The 28-year-old striker has an impressive form to look back on and I think all football fans remember him especially from his time at Man City. He was at the Manchester side from 2010 to 2013 and in his 54 appearances, he bagged 20 goals. From 2013-2014, he appeared 43 times and scored 26 times for AC Milan which found the interest of Liverpool. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a successful period there and they loaned him back to AC Milan. He only found the back of the net once in 20 games.

The past few years have seen a bit of an improvement as Balotelli spent 3 years with Nice. In 2019, he signed for Marseille where he scored 8 goals in 12 games. Only now, it’s looking like he could be let go for free.

Even though his transfer fee may not cost a penny, his wages probably will stack up so if a fee can be negotiated for the striker to be paid, he should be an exciting signing. Fans have been very divided on the player, as some believe he will be worth it for his football. Quite a few remember the reputation he made for himself and are quite put off.

Off the field

The Italian was known to be in a “training ground bust-up” with the ex-Man City manager, Mancini. Jose Mourinho once described him as ‘unmanageable.’ He drove into a women’s prison for a ‘look around,’ threw darts at a youth player during a training ground ‘prank’. There’s a list of things that have been reported that will probably never be cleared up to whether they’re true or not.

Some West Ham fans are saying that his behaviour has calmed down so he may be able to focus on playing football. However, only this week, The Sun reported that he paid a man £1800 to drive his moped into the sea.

What do you think West Ham fans?

3 things Tielemans will continue to bring to Leicester City

Leicester City has announced that they have signed Youri Tielemans permanently after his loan spell. The Football Manc Cave will now look at what he will bring to the foxes ahead of next season.

Tielemans spent the second half of last season on loan with Leicester City and impressed not only the club, manager and team but also fans and other clubs. Brendan Rogers has revealed how he has fought off competition from other clubs in signing the 22-year-old. He will join them on a 4-year contract.

The midfielder hasn’t only chosen to join the foxes instead of looking elsewhere, he’s also left AS Monaco. So before the start of the 2019/20 campaign, what will he bring to Leicester City?

Goals & Assists

One of the most impressive stats that the midfielder has, is that in only 13 appearances last season, he bagged 3 goals and managed 4 assists. This is probably a big factor behind him being permanently signed to the foxes and with that record, it surely can only improve. Fans will expect the same standard though so let’s hope he doesn’t flop.

Experience At Young Age

When you look at his background, his youth is something that has played a big part in making him the player he is today. He’s a product of Anderlecht’s youth and signed his first professional contract in 2013 at only 16 years old.

Tielemans became the youngest Belgian player to ever feature in the Champions League. Off the back of this, he received the Belgian Young Footballer Of The Year Award In 2017. With all of this to consider, he can only maintain the same standard with the foxes and as he matures, he should only get better.

Excitement For Fans

I think it’s safe to say that fans will be happy to see him play knowing that he’s one of their own and not just on loan. The general reaction already seems to be that foxes fans think they’ve got a quality signing. Even fans of other teams have congratulated Leicester and said fair play in regards to the transfer news. Hopefully, he’ll be worth the £40 million.

2 Arsenal replacements for Ozil they must look at – Agree?

Mesut Ozil has been linked with Turkish side Fenerbahce, and the funds they would receive could be a huge turning point in Arsenal’s transfer window.

Arsenal has been plagued with a £45million budget for Unai Emery to make amendments to his squad this summer. This means that offloading players in order to bring in players could result in a hectic transfer window for the Gunners.

Last season, Ozil made 35 appearances under new manager Emery. Compared to the similarly regarded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who made 51 appearances, in all competitions.

Ozil has fallen out of favour with both the manager and the fans, and as the midfielder edges towards 31 years old, he may well be looking for a big move away. However, in the current financial state of Turkish football teams, it is unlikely that any could afford his £350,000 per week wage, unless the German humbly accepts a wage decrease.

With two years left on his contract, Ozil could rake in upwards of a £30million budget increase, and there are two potential replacements for Arsenal to spend that money on…

James Maddison

After being linked with Manchester United, it is unlikely that this young Englishman will join them after the heated interaction between themselves and his teammate Harry Maguire. It has been confirmed that Leicester City has obtained the services of Youri Tielemans, meaning the availability of Maddison may well have increased.

This attacking-midfielder had a breakthrough season in the recent campaign. Creating 100 chances in the Premier League, more than any other player in the competition.

Paulo Dybala

This option may seem too lucrative. However, Dybala became frustrated at Juventus after the introduction of the greatest player in the world; Cristiano Ronaldo.

His current worth stands at around £76million as rated by Transfermarkt, which may mean he could be the only big signing Arsenal can bring in this summer. But with regards to shirt sales and performances on the pitch, there is a lot he could offer the Gunners in the place of the work-shy Mesut Ozil.

2 reasons why Liverpool should let Origi go this summer

Champions League hero, Divock Origi is considering a long-term contract at Liverpool but wants more time on the pitch.

Liverpool fans will remember the incredible contributions the 24-year-old Belgian forward made last season. He scored 2 goals in the incredible comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final. As well as scoring the winning goal in the final, sealing the deal on Liverpool’s sixth European success.

However, Roberto Firmino made 48 appearances in all competitions last season, whilst Origi made only 21, mainly coming on off the bench. The Football Manc Cave now understand that Jurgen Klopp is keen on offering Origi a long-term contract with the Merseyside Reds.

The 4-3-3 formation with the famous forward three of Mo Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mané, it would be difficult for manager Klopp to promise more play time to Origi with the dominance he has with his current setup.

With this in mind, here are 2 reasons Klopp should let Origi leave this summer…

He could fetch a sweet penny

In 2014, Liverpool signed Origi from French side Lille for just north of £10million, a price he has more than lived up to. Since, he has had his ups and downs on loan spells, one on a return to Lille and another in Germany with Wolfsburg.

After being trusted to perform on the world’s biggest stage against the worlds biggest teams, the asking price for Origi could be easily quadrupled, if not more.

However, with one year left on his contract, Liverpool could see this promising striker walk alone through the exit doors of Anfield for free, after the upcoming 19/20 campaign, should his playing time not increase.

Bring in a bench warmer

It is clear that Origi is itching to get play time, but it would be near impossible to break through with the likes of Firmino in his position.

Firmino will turn 28 in the upcoming season, he could have 3-5 more years of the current form he is in. Meaning Origi would be a second choice striker until he is a similar age to what his Brazilian superior is now.

By selling Origi in the region of £40million, it would allow Klopp to introduce a striker who is happy to sit on the bench and play the role of ‘super-sub’.

Everton with an unlikely move for Premier League winning goal-getter

Atletico Madrid man Diego Costa is being considered by Everton as an attempt to prove their eagerness to challenge at the top of English football.

After a dreadful season for one of the world’s most well-known strikers, Diego Costa is likely to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

Last season, Costa endured an eight-match ban for abuse towards a referee. He has fallen out of favour with staff and teammates and only scored one goal, in his 14 La Liga appearances. Safe to say, both the Spanish national striker and the greatest underdogs in Spanish football, Atletico Madrid, would be happy for the two to part ways.

Everton is seemingly unfazed by Costa’s poor season. As the Brazilian born Spanish international has proven himself at a Premier League standard once before during his spell at Chelsea.

Premier League experience

Costa scored 59 goals in 120 appearances for Chelsea, having two Premier League titles and a League Cup to his name.

Everton looked a solid squad in the 18/19 campaign, losing out the European football by 3 points, finishing 8th behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun are currently the only natural strikers in The Toffees ranks. Which stresses the importance of signing a prolific striker this summer should Everton look to move forward rather than backwards.

Since 2017, Everton has solidly placed either 7th or 8th in the Premier League. This demonstrates that the blues of Merseyside are capable of challenging the top end of the Premier League, and star signings such as Diego Costa could be what they need to prevent the side from stagnating into a mid-table side.

Winning mentality

By bringing in players with a title-winning mentality, as well as the shocking bigger clubs by pulling off a galactico signing. Everton can push to be higher up the table next season, further enticing other quality players to want to play for the club.

Diego Costa is evidently willing to depart from his current club. However, he would demand big wages from Everton should the two clubs agree on terms.

OPINION: Should Gerrard jump ship at Rangers to join a sinking one at Newcastle Utd

We’ve seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Man United, Frank Lampard to Chelsea. Is it possible to see Steven Gerrard go to Newcastle?

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard gave Rangers FC their best season in recent years after his first full season in charge. The chatter here at the Football Manc Cave is that he is wanted by Mike Ashley, to fill the vacant manager spot at Newcastle United left by his old boss; Rafa Benitez.

With Rangers having resurrected themselves from the financial blows of 2012, the future appears bright for the second best team in Scotland. With Steven Gerrard proving his managerial skills after only one year with the Glasgow club, he has instantly become a favourite at Ibrox Stadium.

Newcastle United are amid pre-season training without a manager following Benitez leaving the club at the end of his contract. Owner Mike Ashley is becoming frustrated with the lack of communication from potential Middle-Eastern buyer Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, at a rumoured £350million.

Fans of The Magpies are refusing to renew their season ticket due to frustration with the running of the club, Mike Ashley has become a villain in his own domain.

Decisions for Gerrard

Gerrard has two options in this scenario. He can continue his success with Rangers, building fantastic relationships with his squad, and push for a goal they are within reach of; challenge and overtake rivals Celtic.

Alternatively, the Liverpool legend could enter a club with an uncertain future, a fight against relegation and little to no backing from the owner.

It may be the case that Gerrard tests his skills in the Premier League once again in the near future. However making a name for himself by being successful at Rangers, who can offer him both domestic and European football, is the way forward for the Liverpudlian.
