A recent poll published by ‘The League of love and hate’ claims Bury’s greatest rivals lies only a few miles around the corner. No surprise geography wins out claiming the Shakers greatest rivals are Bolton Wanderers, polling at 73%, a clear winner.
Although games between these two clubs have been few and far between over recent years, mainly due to the Wanderers time in the Premier League whilst Bury were in League One or Two. Fans of the club still loved a calendar marking game in the year whenever these teams met.
If only it was a coincidence that this poll has launched in the past few days, both teams were due to meet this weekend at the UniBol stadium in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
The less said of Bury and their financial trouble for now, but these games mean so much to the die-hard fans who bleed white and blue blood.
Bolton’s main rivals
This poll will come as little surprise to football fans, although the rivalry may excite Bury more than Bolton. For Wanderers fans, Bury come in as their fifth-biggest rival with just 49% of the vote. Even Oldham is a greater foe for Keith Hill’s side coming in at 51%.
They believe worldwide giants Manchester United are their biggest enemy, despite a lack of encounters over the past decade, as the Whites have tumbled down the football league ladder.
Also on the list following Bolton comes Rochdale (69%) and Oldham (60%), games that have been a far more prominent season in, season out. Yet Bury doesn’t feature as a rival where the Boundary Park faithful is concerned. Man United, Huddersfield Town and Blackburn all come across as a greater rival than that of the Shakers.
However, the recently expelled EFL club will be much missed by Rochdale in the future, as derby day between these football clubs is THE game as far as the opinions of the Dale fans go.
74% of fans prefer days at Gigg Lane than any other club, although fellow Greater Manchester club Oldham is also well thought of.
