Having a small playing squad can be a nightmare when injuries and suspensions start to have an effect on team selection.
Oldham have already suffered the loss of strikers Sam Surridge, Ishmael Miller and Callum Lang at different stages this season so signing additional attacking players should be Frankie Bunn’s top priority in January.
It is not easy to find players who will fit easily into the side when a mix of youthful enthusiasm and experience is needed. To overcome this, I believe that there are currently two players who could inject both of these attributes perfectly.
Signing for arguably the top Premier League side in the country is the dream of many young players but to find that you cannot get into the side must be tremendously frustrating and demoralising. At 19, Diaz has the footballing world at his feet after signing for the Premier League champions four years ago.
However, his appearances have been few and far between and he has attracted the attention of Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain, who would like to tempt him away from the Etihad.
This sort of attention can be distracting to young players and a spell away from City on loan would be beneficial to the young attacking midfielder. There is no doubt that Bunn would relish the prospect of introducing Diaz who can play on either wing, into the side and regular appearances may eventually get him into the City side on a permanent basis.
Attacking players who are still playing at the top level after their 35th birthday are few and far between. Spaniard Aritz Aduriz at 37, is still being chosen for first-team involvement by Athletico Bilbao. He has scored an impressive 167 goals in 374 appearances and might well be persuaded to finish his career at Boundary Park.
Oldham fans shouldn’t be put off the idea of having Aritz in the side due to his age. An experienced player is just what the side needs and his goalscoring abilities in Spain’s La Liga should easily transfer to League Two here.
