A source close to Pompey, has it that Rochdale are set to lose Andy Cannon to League One leaders Portsmouth in the January transfer window.
Our source believes the transfer fee been given for the deal, is £150,000 with Andy set to sign a contract at Portsmouth running through to Summer 2021. It’s worth noting Cannon only has 6 months left on his contract at Rochdale by the time the window opens and that’s perhaps why the fee may seem very low.
The main rumour for his departure is that Andy has apparently had a falling out with Rochdale manager Keith Hill, which alongside injuries has seen him restricted to a mere 6 starts this season for Rochdale with only 3 of those coming in the league.
This would explain his lack of game time as he is very popular among the fans and a lot of them have been questioning his lack of minutes. Portsmouth scouts have apparently been very impressed with him when they have come to watch him, which leads me to believe his absence is more than likely down to other factors rather than ability.
Another rumour I have heard about his potential departure is that Rochdale have quite a large squad this season and that cost-cutting sales are required, Hill possibly sees Cannon as one of his most saleable assets that have been on the fringes most of the season, as the midfield, in particular, has a lot of depth this season.
I believe its more likely to be the former than the latter.
My opinion is that I feel it was great business getting Andy to sign a 1-year deal back in June as there was a real possibility of him leaving for free. Although I’m sad to be losing him, as I felt Rochdale were a better team for his inclusion. They, fortunately, do have options in that position and his loss may not be season-defining.
