How can Oldham Athletic turn their dismal start to the season around
Oldham Athletic got knocked out of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup this week. The Football Manc Cave are looking at what Oldham need to do to try and turn these losses around.
Oldham faced Barrow in the cup and went 1-0 down after 3 minutes. Fans were laughing and making jokes about how quick they’d gone under. 18 minutes later and Oldham equalised. At 21 minutes in, Oldham found the back of the net again only for it to be ruled offside. At 39 minutes, the Latic’s did go 2-1 up. Things were looking hopeful after 65 minutes as they went 3-1 up.
It was an eventful end to the game as Oldham found the back of the net yet again and it was ruled offside for a second time. A minute after, Barrow found a second and with three minutes to go, Barrow equalised.
Unfortunately, Barrow won on penalties 12-11 and knocked Oldham out of the cup. Banide put out a side that wasn’t his typical first choice, which could have indicated that he is more focussed on the league.
Since the ex Bolton captain joined the club and has been available, I think he’s made the difference. As a Bolton fan, I was gutted when he left us because I knew what Oldham was getting. A defender who is a natural leader, gives 100% every game and even scores. That’s exactly what he’s done at Oldham and has been rewarded with the captain’s armband already.
He made the FLW League Two Team Of The Week last week. He didn’t play against Barrow and to me, it shows because they had a lead up until the last quarter of the game and threw it away. When Wheater is playing, he drives the rest of the defence until the last minute of the game.
Since new signings were made and Banide has made Wheater captain, Oldham has started to get a few points and play a little better. They managed to get a draw with Exeter, draw with Plymouth and beat Cambridge. For me, getting knocked out of the cup isn’t a bad thing. Some fans will disagree.
However, this is a new manager and he has new players that he is trying to get to gel with the rest of the team. The league is the most important out of the competitions and if there are fewer cups to focus on this year, surviving the league will be easier. Oldham is climbing out of the bottom three slowly, so now it’s time to start climbing the league.
