Nathan Byrne still positive ahead of Wigan Athletic campaign

Wigan Athletic star Nathan Byrne insists “the boys aren’t too worried” after they lost four consecutive games, without conceding a goal.

It is going to take some time for us all to get used to each other’s play, with so many new players.” Byrne said.

Although I agree on a level, the away form and performances are no different from last year. At Preston, we didn’t turn up, lacked effort, no urgency or quality, why? There’s more to it than just blaming it on new signings that haven’t fully settled yet. It’s an excuse, but a one that doesn’t fit with me, personally.

Byrne went on to say: “There were positives to take from the performance at Middlesbrough” was there really? Let’s not forget Boro have been poor so far this season and were on Tuesday, why shouldn’t we give them a good game? We’ve got a squad capable of giving anyone in this league a game, away from home it’s just not happening.

I don’t see many positives from that Middlesbrough match. We had one shot on target and conceded such a poor goal. Jamal Lowe looked bright and we kept the ball pretty well, but that’s not good enough for a Championship side hoping to push on.

It’s about levels and standards. We need to break this hoodoo away from home and win a game comfortably. Tough I know, but we’ve got to be due an away win. The longer this winless away run goes on, the more I fear for the future of Paul Cook and where Wigan will finish this season. We can’t rely on our solid home form forever, at some point it will slip, and we need to be able to pick up points away to cover that.
