Experienced striker to shine for Oldham Athletic next season?

Can Oldham Athletic build a solid team around talisman Chris O’Grady going into the new League 2 season?

At The Football Manc Cave, we look at who new boss Laurent Banide can trust to feature in his starting 11 come August 3rd.

I expect The Latics to be a new-look side in August. The Frenchman will undoubtedly have a few tricks up his sleeve and targets to implement them. Although Oldham won’t have a big transfer budget, Banide must’ve been reassured he will have funds to sign a few players he wants. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken the job at Boundary Park.

If Banide heads to France for his signings, it’s imperative he finds the balance between quality and experience. League Two is not the league to try and play fancy football, with players that can’t take getting fouled 10 times a game. Lincoln City played some brilliant football last season under Danny Cowley, however, when they needed to fight and dig in for results, they did it.

I hope for Oldham’s sake that Banide has watched some League Two football and knows what to expect. Physical battles, lots of direct football and an enduring 46 game season.

One man that will be up for the fight and is experienced as any other player in League Two, Chris O’Grady. Although he’s not the force of old, he’s still a player that will give 110% and score goals if given chances. The 33-year-old striker has played for Brighton, Barnsley, Burton and Oldham just to name a few, a veteran that youngsters can feed off. His experience and pressing from the front will be vital to Oldham next season. If The Latics build their side around pros like him, they may surprise a few next campaigns.
