Bunn Should Look To Strengthen This One Area In January – Agreed?
Oldham’s defeat against Exeter on Saturday highlighted a possible flaw in the side which needs to be addressed. Although we have looked confident and organised in midfield and attack, our defence has given cause for concern on a number of occasions.
Life was made far too easy for Exeter’s forward line and a couple of Oldham’s defenders looked slow and lacking in concentration. It is also an area where we have very few options so bringing in some additional players looks like a priority.
There is also a lack of experience in the squad with the duties falling mainly to veteran skipper Peter Clarke. Clarke has done a magnificent job at the heart of the defence but it would be wishful thinking to hope that he could take part in all the remaining fixtures without picking up any injuries.
It is well documented that Oldham aren’t the richest of clubs despite being bought by Abdallah Lemsagam who is the Managing Director of sport 2 jlt. His contacts have provided us with several players and he may well be amenable to bringing in a couple of extra players in January.
Given the current number of French players in the squad, a look at Christopher Samba might be a good idea. The Congo International now 34, started his career in France and is now a free agent having spent time at Dinamo Moscow, Blackburn and QPR.
If the club is looking for experience, another player without a club is Glen Johnson who has played at the very top of English football and represented England on 54 occasions. It may well transpire that Samba and Johnson have decided to call it a day having not had a game since July but they are still listed as being available and half a season with Oldham Athletic might be just what they’re looking for!
The other option available is to promote some of the club’s youngsters to the first team squad. Javid Swaby-Neavin and Harry Norris have equipped themselves well at Academy level and might solve Bunn’s defensive problems.
