Leeds United’s youth has been heavily involved in recruitment over the summer transfer window.
Since Andrea Radrizzani took over at the Whites, the level of football below the first team has been a point of interest. Both the Leeds under 23’s and under 18’s sides were highly successful last season. Many players have now been brought in to make sure that the younger teams maintain that same standard.
The latest signing comes from Manchester United, and that is 16-year-old Alfie Hughes. He will go straight into the Under 18’s side at Elland Road and fans are wondering what he will bring to the club…
His age is an obvious factor of what’s to come. He can only get better and grow as a footballer. Hopefully, he will develop from his teen years and end up in the first team at Leeds eventually so that he can make a name for himself. Being at a club like Man United and being talented enough to gain interest from other clubs, already is a massive achievement.
Leeds fans have already praised the youngster for turning down a scholarship with The Red Devil’s to join their team’s youth. However, being at a top-flight club at such a young age and then having to leave them will probably be a blow to Hughes. My guess is that he’s thinking logically in terms of his own future. I think he will now have the determination and mindset to get into the first team at Leeds, get his name out there, make an impression and end up back at Old Trafford.
Long term, that may be negative for the Whites in losing a player. You’ve just got to think that the youngster may want to re-join the reds at some point in his career. So he will try to increase his value if he progresses. In the time that he is with Leeds, he should produce some top quality football in a bid to gain interest from top clubs again. That way, it’ll be a win-win situation, Leeds will hopefully get good football and a lot of money for him.
