The Football Manc Cave

Focusing on the football news in Greater Manchester

’12 years ago I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at Lionesses but now I’m loving it’ 2 things we learnt from England Women’s win

I knew from before this women’s World Cup started that I would enjoy watching England and they have not disappointed.

They have done a brilliant job of reaching the Semi Final’s of the competition and I hope that they can bring it home. The 3-0 win over Norway on Thursday night saw goals from Jill Scott, Ellen White and an absolute screamer from Lucy Bronze. They will now face either USA on Tuesday.

Even though I have praised them, I do think last night saw some sloppy play. If they make mistakes like they did last night, they will end up conceding goals against their next opponents. I think a lot of the mistakes came from the back last night. Every time I was about to say that Millie Bright looked good, she made some kind of mistake that led to Steph Houghton becoming saviour such as the goal line clearance that she made. I thought Lucy Bronze had a great game, however, she looked as if she was more focussed on grabbing a goal leaving others to cover her position.

With that in mind, what are we all learning from the Lionesses?

1. We learned that they can still produce goals when not playing at our absolute best.

Putting the negativity aside, the second thing we are learning from the Lionesses is that if you a determined, you can make a change. Women’s football has come so far and they are proving that this World Cup. It is drawing in bigger audiences than ever and making people sit up, watch and take note.
